That’s right, you read correctly. SNK Playmore and Tommo Inc. are bringing us a new Neo-Geo game system. Unfortunately not in the current gen way you may have been hoping for.
Attempting to cash in on the current rise in retro gaming, the new Neo-Geo system is a new version of the original Neo-Geo that came out in the early 90′s, and it has some pretty good features. Bad news first, it has a $199 price point. Now on to the good news. With this iteration you actually get two systems, one console base and one handheld, which includes a Neo-Geo arcade stick and twenty classic NEOGEO titles pre-loaded. The twenty titles include:
| 3 COUNT BOUT | LEAGUE BOWLING |
| ART OF FIGHTING II | MAGICIAN LORD |
| ALPHA MISSION II | METAL SLUG |
| BASEBALL STARS II | MUTATION NATION |
| CYBER LIP | NAM 1975 |
| FATAL FURY | PUZZLED |
| FATAL FURY SPECIAL | REAL BOUT – FATAL FURY SPECIAL |
| THE KING OF FIGHTERS ’95 | SAMURAI SHODOWN II |
| KING OF THE MONSTERS | SUPER SIDEKICKS |
| LAST RESORT | WORLD HEROES PERFECT |
Not to shabby of a bundle. The X Station (main base), will come with standard V/A, HDMI, and monitor hookups. You’ll use this to play with the NEOGEO X stick, as well as to charge and run games from the handheld. Yep, the portable is where the games are actually stored. This little thing is pretty well stacked. It’s got a 4.3″ LCD display, stereo speakers, a headphone jack, and a expandable game card slot, as well as your standard handheld buttons. By the looks of things the handheld inserts into the X Station like the SNES and Genesis games of old. No word as of yet if the extra X Sticks will be sold separately.
What could be the deciding factor of this system’s lifespan will be the game price points, and whether or not you’ll have to buy them separately, in haphazard bundles, or get them in franchise bundles.
