Some will prefer to say that the RPG has had its day. I beg to differ.
IF you are referring to japanese role playing games, I would be inclined to agree however. The 16-bit era was very kind to this genre. During that era RPGs were both popular and profitable. You could even argue that the market was flooded. In addition, given the current state of Japanese RPGs, I wouldn’t mind seeing less of them.
However, with games like Fallout 3, Mass Effect, and Elder Scrolls V melding genres together, there is definitely room for more innovation. Could you imagine a game with the immersion of Skyrim and the quirks of a Japanese role playing game? Sooner or later someone is going to crack this formula and find the best of both worlds.
And I will be waiting, $60 in hand.
