Killer Instinct 3?

posted by James Knotts on December 24, 2009

ki-title1Many of us have fond memories of Killer Instinct and have been wanting a new installment. Well after doing some digging around it seems that RARE has started hinting at a new installment finally. So far from what I’ve come across it looks like that if it does happen it’s going to be for the Project NATAL. So it could be quite interesting to see how this would work with the motion tracking.

While I am not a fan of the 360 and don’t have one of my own I would love to see this franchise brought back to life.  Especially with the idea of using the motion tracking. While I was in Seattle back in 01-02 I got the chance to play a version of Tekken 3 that was set up to use motion tracking as the command inputs. It was a very interesting experience. The controls were not as responsive as you would have wanted for that kind of game, but it did show promise. I’m a king player so trying to do his multi-links was very hard. But with the motion controls on the Wii for Dragonball z Tenkaichi 3 being so responsive and fun I think that we can now play those type of games. Now granted there is a lot of room for some serious problems. With the NATAL supposed to be a “controller free” interface how you would pull of moves could be scary. Having played fighting games with hands free motion control interfaces some inputs are hard to do. Dragonpunch and fireball inputs are especially hard to do. But like I said this was back in 01-02. So there has been plenty of time to refine how you would do these.

Only time will be able to tell. Hopefully if this comes to fruition we will have a great way to play fighting games that will truly pull us into the experience. But my thought is that RULE #1 will be CARDIO, CARDIO, CARDIO.

Rare has been rumored to be working on a proper KI3 ever since KI2. With the resurgence of fighting games it would not surprise me if Rare tried it. Rare however, is a shadow of its former self and probably would screw this up. As it stands, the most significant thing Rare has contributed to the Xbox 360 is the Avatars.

Well on the 30th of November they actually hinted at it. The company spokesmen did. So it seems better of a chance they might be doing it.
