It was new to a lot of people (I'd never played Resident Evil). Gears 2 wasn't as good, because they messed up matchmaking. Also, it was more of the same. As for the chainsaw, until a friend told me that first you push 'B' for melee, and then pull the right trigger...I had all kinds of problems. The right trigger revs the chainsaw, which also seems to help "aim" it too. It's still kind of weird, but I had no idea you had to rev the chainsaw, so only like 1/4 of my attempts made it.
