Gamestop: Friends with Benefits

I received an email from Gamestop which I am sure many others have received but probably deleted immediately.  This was one of those “Would you like to take a survey” type messages.  Well I decided share my thoughts.  The survey starts out with basic info request such as how many games systems you own and how much you spent and intend to spend on gaming software and accessories.  After about 15 minutes of radio-button-checkbox-click-a-thon I arrived at a screen that actually peaked my interest.

As you can see above, Gamestop is trying to motivate people to come to their store more, with incentives to buy and sell more.  Looks like they may be worried about Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City and many others entering the used  game trade market.  I do not think the $50 dollar a year membership fee will sit well with many.

On the few pages after this you are given a list of “possible” membership perks, such as free 3-day rental on used games, free 30-day live membership or extended time, and I also saw one that said “complimentary system checkout for parties.”  To be honest, if many of these “possible” perks are instituted then this does sound like an awesome value.  I know I could used the free rentals. Game informer sucks!

Just kidding. I wish that they would just up their trade-in value to like 50% of the game’s retail cost. They could sell them at 75% retail and still make a buttload of money…

The membership plan is stupid and you probably won’t come out ahead unless you buy a crapton of games and if that’s the case, they win anyway. It’s a win win for GameStop, not so much for customers. If it was $10 bucks maybe, but $50? That’s an XBOX Live membership.
