From The Archives: Gametap (February 21, 2006)
Here’s another ode to the old original opinion days. I’ll be doing an updated review of Gametap in the next few weeks. Thought I would post my view of this service three years ago, just to make it apparent how much my views have changed. I’ll be posting soon. Hope for the best!
As time goes on, and more and more generations of video game systems are introduced, there sometimes arises the need to go back to the roots. We all get that retro feeling from time to time. Surprisingly enough, as a retro gamer, there are more than a few options. The technically inclined may choose the route of the ‘rom’ and ‘emulator’. This is a free option, but not a legal one. Another option would be to get your hands on the original hardware, but why deal with all those old video gaming systems cluttering up your home. Someone else may cure their retro sweet tooth with those cheap-crappy controller, all-in-ones that you can buy at Wal-Mart. Lastly I say; we finally have a savior, Gametap!
Gametap is a subscription based video gaming service. Over a broadband connection, you have access to a library of over 350+ retro video gaming titles. The requirements for the Gametap service are: a Broadband connection, an 800MHz processor, Windows 2000 or XP, 256MB RAM, and 5GB free storage. The bulk of the Gametap library is comprised of retro games, but there are a few newer titles in their PC Games sections. The games are divided into several categories, such as: Gametap Picks, My Favorites, Game System, and Games Types.
First Impressions…Guitar Hero Metallica
So, Guitar Hero: Metallica came out today and as always (since Guitar Hero III) I was skeptical about its level of quality. I know its still really early, and I’ve only logged about three hours of play time, but I think Neversoft finally got it right, mostly.

Graphene? Graphite’s(Pencil Lead) Hot Cousin
Was reading Inside Tech today and they state that MIT researchers have possibly finally discovered a use for this substance. For those who do not know what graphene is I recommend you click/read this (I did). This substance is, on a microscopic and somewhat chemical level, almost identical to pencil lead. MIT has discovered that they can use this substance as a multiplier on transistors. The multiplier is the thing that gives us clock (mhz, ghz) for our CPUs. MIT states graphene does not create all the interference that the currently used substance does. That interference has to be cleaned up in real time by the system which eats up lots of system throughput/cylces thus making our processors run a lot slower than they theoretically could. So in theory, as stated by MIT, the use of Graphene could lead us to 500ghz-1000ghz processors on a Single Core.
Now here is the bad news Continue Reading…
Is it OnLīve or OnLive…
Who knew that the biggest news to come out of the GDC this year (so far) wouldn’t come from Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft? Actually, it didn’t even come out of a Game Developer. Mova (apparently a subsidiary of Rearden if that helps anybody) has announced the OnLive Game Service. Its a new gaming console, in as much as it allows the player to play games on it, but other than that it breaks 100% of traditional console conventions. Using cloud computing OnLive computes and renders gameplay on a remote server and simply provides the gamer with the equivalent of a interactive video stream. The idea seems as brilliant as it is bonkers. Assuming they can tame the inevitable lag situation, does OnLive really have a place in the gaming world? Is there a market for such antics? Who would they sell this to, hardcores, soccer moms, Gamestop haters, cheap tightwads like myself, new gamers, or fans of Big Brother?

Onlive…it’s thinking (apparently really freaking hard)
If Onlive does become a new standard, with all of the computing being done of external servers, hardware upgrades would become irrelevant. Is this the answer to rising next-gen console prices? How long will it take to catch on (if ever) and what will the price point be? OnLive’s CEO, Steve Perlman, has officially stated that the plan is for the launch price to be significantly lower than that of the Wii. He ’s even billing it as the the cheapest and most powerful console in the world. Its true that if this catches on and becomes the norm I will miss collecting all my game’s and building a physical library of discs to line my book shelves (in lieu of actual books), but that didn’t stop me from appling to participate in the open beta this summer. Thoughts?
My **** in a Box
Home theater coming. Received my 100 inch projector screen today and Sergio came by and peeled away about 95% of the wallpaper. Also received the projector mount yesterday. And for those of you who don’t get the “BOX” joke click here.
What’s NEX?
Walked into my local Target today and happened to stumble upon these NEXON game cards. Who would have ever thought this business model could make it? I guess it has… free to play, pay for more STUFF. All I can say is that I won’t be buying a NEXON cards anytime soon, but whatever floats your boat. YAY Combat Arms, boo Maple Story!

Max is bringing the Payne this fall…

Rockstar has announced that Max Payne 3 will be releasing this fall for 360, PS3, and PC. I have never been a big Max Payne fan, but I can’t help but wonder about his new look:

He looks like a cross between Sam Fisher and Joe Rogan.
It should also be noted that Remedy Entertainment, the company that made the first two games, wont’ be developing this time. They are still busy with Alan Wake. Geez, is that game EVER GOING TO COME OUT!? I got a tshirt advertising the ‘psychological action thriller’ at e3 way back in 2005…
